Another Lion King 90’s Kids!

The beloved 90’s kid gang is back!Simba, Nala, Rafiki, Zazu, Timon, Pumbaa and yes, even Mufasa are back for Disney’s new Lion King sequel, although the cast has had a bit of a shakeup.

The movie The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar, the follow-up to the straight-to-video films The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride and The Lion King 1½, will air on Nov. 22 on Disney Junior. The new flick will be followed by a series, The Lion Guard, which will air on the channel in 2016.

The film and show focus on Simba and Nala’s son Kion, who leads a team of animals to protect the Pride Lands.

“It’s kind of like The Lion King meets The Avengers,” Nancy Kanter, Disney Junior General Manager, told The Wall Street Journal in 2014.

James Earl Jones will reprise his role again as Mufasa, the late King of the Pride Lands, while Ernie Sabella portrays Pumbaa the warthog again.

The other returning characters are played by franchise newcomers. Rob Lowe stars as adult Simba, replacing Matthew Broderick, while Gabrielle Union takes over the role of adult Nala, which was portrayed previously by One Tree Hill’s Moira Kelly.

Kevin Schon replaces Nathan Lane as Timon, Khary Payton replaces Robert Guillaume as Rafiki, Jeff Bennettreplaces Rowan Atkinson as Zazu

Max Charles, who played young Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Manmovies, provides the voice of Kion. Former soap star Eden Riegel plays his sister, Kiara. Neve Campbell played an older version of the character in the 1998 film The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride. Her love interest, Kovu, does not appear in The Lion Guard.

Other cast members of the new TV film and series include Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland, who plays a lioness named Tiifu, voice actress and former The X Factor contestant Diamond White as the cheetah Fuli, Dusan Brown as the hippopotamus Beshte, The Middle’s Atticus Shaffer as the cattle egret Ono and Joshua Rush as the honey badger Bunga, Timon’s adopted nephew.

I really can’t wait to see how this turns out with my nieces seeing that Mufasa dies in the first movie.
