Film director Spike Lee and actress Jada Pinkett Smith have said they will not attend next month’s Oscars ceremony, mainly because there are “mostly white nominees.”
A lot of people, specifically black celebrities have expressed their dissatisfaction with the low level of racial diversity at the Oscars. For many years, black actors, music artistes and directors have been ignored during nominations, and only a select few have managed to win an Oscar award in over 80 years.
The perception that blacks are not eligible to be nominated, talk less of win many oscars has been frowned at by many celebrities, and this year, more than a hand full might be boycotting the award ceremony.
Jada Pinkett Smith said in a video message on Facebook that “begging for acknowledgement, or even asking, diminishes dignity and diminishes power.”
Chris Rock, who is meant to host this year’s show, has also been pressured to step down from the position.
Tyrese wrote on his Instagram:
“Chris Rock do the right thing make a statement – were relying on you to DO the right thing….. There is NO JOKE YOU CAN CRACK TO EVER CHANGE THE WAY WE ALL FEEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
50 Cent had something to say too. The rapper wrote:
“Chris please do not do the oscars awards. You mean a lot man, don’t do it. Please.”
Several other stars including Snoop Dogg, George Clooney, David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong’o have expressed that they are very unhappy with the lack of diversity at the Oscars.
What do you think?
